Describing the Pleasure of Squishing Dandelions Between Your Fingers as Linkbait?

Posted on | March 1, 2008 | 51 Comments

Several days ago I wrote a post about how Dandelions bring back memories of my childhood long past. The inspiration was contributing to my angst of knowing I had another birthday coming up and was not looking forward to it. Birthdays are something that I have not looked forward to as the years pass and this one was one that need to be pushed out of my mind. I wanted an escape from the everyday emotions of life that always seem to unravel right before our eyes.

smashing dandelions as linkbaitThis brought me to the inspiration of how could I create an emotional linkbait that would still motivate active users of social media to create a return of emotional investment by way of social recognition.

The experiment was a success in my opinion. It helped me to get to know several readers of the Collective-Thoughts blog much better than I would have if I were to have written a white paper about the intricacies of linkbait instead of showing the over all results. It also helped me, or should I say it pulled me out of one roll many have seen me in and placed me into an entire new position in their mind. By letting my guard down and describing a moment in my life I connected with a few more readers!

I am not going to discuss the over all numbers, the unique views, or how long each reader stayed. I will say I have been very surprised at the turnout and the results I have accumulated.

To sum things up for today. If you posted a review of my last post on Collective-Thoughts, check your StumbleUpon email in the coming days as I will follow up with the reviews of your sites very soon.

Thank you again for making my day that much more interesting.

How personal can we get before we endanger ourselves? I don’t mind posting personal things, but don’t want to put myself or my family in any danger. How far can we go and what precautions do we need to take before posting personal things on the internet?

I wonder if you could make a site that features linkbait for people to use, i.e. a site that offers up linkbait content for people to try and use. if it’s somehow watermarked that could work(images or videos)…anyone?

link baiting has always been one of the regular tasks which a webmaster would perform and try to become an expert in as this is the best way to increase your social presence and make some new friends in the same niche.

Along with this you get a couple of back links that helps to increase your rankings in SERPs

first off, well its sad that you felt that way about birthdays… for me its always a cause for a celebration… anyway, i think that it’s a great idea to incorporate ‘emotions’ with linkbaiting… it becomes more personal, people will find you sincere and will connect with you more easily, at least that’s what i think..

Its a great strategy, write as much content relative to what people are searching, while ensuring that there are as little competitors as possible. 100 additional visitors per month optimised is far better then paying for those 100 visitors on the PPC model each month. great post.

I keep hearing the term ‘linkbait’ more and more these days. I have never actually given the technique a go, but plan to in the near future since its one of the few remaining quality white-hat techniques out there. Is it best to DIY or pay someone to complete the process? Thanks

These analogies that are being used are quite effective, as it is hard to forget what it is like to squish a dandelion, and now it is connected to the concept of link bait for readers of this message. Mental images have quite a bit of longevity.

Maybe it is because English is not my native language – but the term "link bait" seems to be negative? Used in a constructive way it is positive because it makes the webmasters try to actually put some relevant content on their sites… At least that’s my strategy, even though it is very time consuming

I do agree business and personal lives aren’t totally two separate things. Its after all one person in two situations. Doesn’t mean that there is no difference between the two; but there should be a good balance.

I agree with Mover on this one. There are times when personal/business lives can cross paths. But, it can also be a scary thing when they do so. I had an incident with facebook a while back that was not too cool. Taught me to be a little less cavalier with personal info. Have a good one!

I think it’s great that sharing something personal paid off for you. I mean, sure it’s great sharing technical information and things that you are an expert on, but people like other real people. Everyone has emotions and personal experiences, so why not share them along with the regular content? I think that was a great idea.

Link baiting is practised by most website owners and blogs. As web designers and SEO experts explore new ways to attract links, so are search engine algorithms to discount such efforts. Effective websites try to use unique, innovative approaches for link bait, Unfortunately any new technique that proves to be effective, is soon followed by millions of other sites and blogs and looses its value to some extent.
