When to Post When You Have Little to Say
Over the past couple weeks I have had several conversations about whether or not to post when you have little to say.
My take on the subject is not to post empty posts. Recently I have been working on the release of a new site, so I am breaking my silence with this post. What is your take on posting just to post?
I also would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year!

I believe most bloggers will come to a time when they have nothing in mind to post… My take on this subject would be if you are facing the above situation, resist yourself from posting anything.

Hey Mark … you’re comment form appears to be partially broken from within Firefox … won’t let me add my url. When trying, it affixes it to the end of the email field.
In any case, I’m trying to take 3-4 hours every 4 months to brainstorm blog ideas in advance, for those times when absolutely nothing comes to mind for a new post. Then, hopefully I’m never left in the lurch.

Nope. I don’t do it. Shoot, even those posts where I *do* have something to say don’t always turn out as well as I had wanted
But I would rather wait weeks to post rather than post nothing. However, I am willing to post to share something I find on the internet (a link or a youtube video). Is that posting when you have nothing to say?

I have to agree with the “post when you have something to say” philosophy. I think for bloggers the “trick” is to have something to say on a regular basis.
Happy New Year, right back at ya!

I think that if you have nothing to say then you should not just post fluff. Your readers will find it disingenuous. Its just a waist of their time. But, by the same token, not posting consistently is also bad.
If you really do not have anything to say, instead of posting fluff or just being silent, you should write a post promoting a blog or blogger you like.
At worst you can always do a link post of articles that you think your readers will enjoy. At least you have presented som value to your readers.

Hey Mark,
As you have probably been able to see, yourself.. I decided to go into a blog funk, last month. I really had nothing to say that I felt was worthy beyond me..
So I spent more time abroad in blogland.
I’m back.. and I’ve missed you! Happy New Year to you!

Well, i have seen many local business going into blogging but they do not have a dedicated staff that publish fresh content every now and then. Their blogs may be outdated from weeks to months and it ain’t doing anything good.

If you have an active commenting following, something nothing in particular creates the most discussion.

It’s better to write something on your blog rather than not updating it frequently..
not updating only points to one thins - a dead blog..

I agree with admission - it seems we read the same blog - john chow no?

I have often wondered this myself. But, usually, if I start writing..something surprising will end up coming out. So, I think that it is worth it! Better to keep channels open than shut.

I think you’ve got your resounding answer - post -something-
We’ve got enough information overload as it is. You gotta think of the attention competition.
By the same token, yes you should post regularly - but regularly doesn’t have to be daily. Honestly I’d rather see a blog with excellent content twice a month than something like … say Mashable … that spams with 70% repeat junk.
Adam Smith @ 6:34 am
I run into a lot blogs that are using old WP versions and haven’t been used more months. Just a waste of resources.
