Do you want to be that guy who resorts to that kind of tactic? Karma is a serious bitch and Matt Cutts isn't stupid. Google Bowling is hardly a cutting edge tactic and will eventually come back to bite you, especially because the people selling the links will get penalized to and have no incentive not to rat you out if they think you are responsible for the snitching.

Guys here please do not take this post seriously. By doing that does not benefits one in the long run. Google will run investigation prior to the report. If you really does buy tons of paid links for your competitors, chances are Google can easily detect the links age and get back to you.

What they should do is just eliminate the effect that these paid links have altogether. Treat them like they don't exist. Then when someone tries to abuse the system, it doesn't penalize you for something that you didn't do.

GMansky: I did not make it to the last SES, I wish I had. This is a topic that hits very near to home for me.

A while back I was finding lots of links that were pointing to one of my financial sites. A week later it was deindexed. So the question of how to find if a competitor is doing this to me has always been on my mind and if there is a way to find them.

The only thing I can say is no. I can't tell if they are doing it to me. But as soon as I find out I will write a post about how to find them.

I'm just afraid general readers might take this seriously. Negative SEO written in a positive way is a little bit distracting.

However, is there a way to find out which competitor did this to our sites?

Well,... ALL my competitors have TONS of paid links. They do not only pay local newspapers but also pay 'Online Media Companies'??? Wo have a long list of domain names with some poor quality and outdated content, but all wth links to my competition. It is not a hidden fact at all that those are paid links. Google still shows those links as a links to my client's domains. So it does sound fun, but in reallity shows us something diferent.

Dude, that's just wrong... but kinda' sounds like fun. Of course until someone does it you - glad you made a point of that. Reminds me of an article I read where a guy managed to push out a girl's long-distance boyfriend. Everything was great until she moved and then he became the long-distance boyfriend - so knowing what he knew he couldn't help but be paranoid.
